Mobility with youth in Tartu

As part of the project, the consortium organised a one-week Mobility in Tartu, Estonia, European Capital of Culture 2024.
20 young creatives coming from Luxembourg, Greece, Poland and Estonia shared observations, discussed, collaborated and experimented around AI and Art.

The goal of the mobility programme was to provide opportunities for young people to reflect on what the creative sector might look like soon, considering the rapid development of AI and the revolution it can bring. Together, the group also explored personal experiences with this technology, questioning its impact on their professions

The activities were focused on exploring ideas and thoughts around the future of art as well as meetings and lectures from experts who engage with AI in their creative work. Several workshops and lectures offered during the trip included ; ethnographic research, AI and music creation, AI resources and how to use them, prompting, generative AI, marketing and the use of AI, debates and discussion on chosen on AI statements, capabilities of AI creation tools …

But all was not work as participants had time to explore museums, street art and the overall setting of the European Capital of Culture 2024 which offered a lot of inspiring exhibits and events.

The time in Tartu was divided into two main sections: development of a creative project in teams and cultural explorations. Since Tartu held the Capital of Culture title, participants had an unique opportunity to interact with various exhibitions, and members of the creative team working behind Tartu 2024, and visit exhibits and museums. Moreover, through a strong network of the organisation, they could also visit Delta Center as well as participate in a street art tour – all activities served the general purpose of building an inspiration for the creative project.

The participants had to create a mixed media art piece in an international group, taking one of two directions: either work with the support of the AI or explore its meaning. The theme that was chosen mirrored one of Tartu’s main concepts “The Art of Survival”. There were discussions and reflections of the art pieces meant to inspire, provoke, and challenge.
This was a platform for the young artists to come together, to share their ideas, and to co-create. They embarked on a short but extraordinary adventure to navigate the uncharted territories of uncertainty and to create something meaningful. With the support of mentors, experts and peer feedback, 5 groups presented their completed work in the form of an exhibition in the Tartu2024 office space, engaging the audience to reflect on what the future of the cross-section of art and technology art might hold.
